RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a communications channel to keep your stakeholders up-to-date with all relevant information. Once they have signed up for the RSS feed on your website they will receive all content submitted to that specific RSS instantly. Your stakeholders are thus given the opportunity to receive for example, all your press releases, news articles, or job opportunities without them ever having to search.
The RSS module for Sitecore enables you to define which posts and articles you want to go out through which RSS feeds, directly from within your Sitecore CMS. You can set up RSS feeds the same way as you set up all other items in Sitecore, you define which posts, articles, etc. are to be distributed through which feed.
RSS feeds offer the opportunity to target your content to specific stakeholders by setting up different feeds with different content. For example, you can have one RSS feed containing only press releases, another with job opportunities, and yet another with blog posts, enabling your visitors to opt-in to the feeds they find interesting and relevant. Additionally, you don't have to be concerned with spam and privacy policies since your stakeholders subscribe to your feeds.
RSS feeds can appear in two ways: either by showing a web page containing a predefined number of items or you can receive RSS feeds instantly by using an RSS reader such as e.g. Google Reader or FeedReader. You can even use your email client (e.g. Microsoft Outlook or Apple’s Mail).
