Strong platforms reduce ambiguity, protect quality and shorten lead times. The patterns below are the shared rails that help Play 2 deliver on the intent set in Play 1. They keep the joins clean so teams can ship features and content steadily and trust the numbers they use to decide what happens next. DXPlaybook treats these as repeatable building blocks rather than silver bullets. The aim is a platform that is fast, safe and measurable without adding ceremony.

Whatever your shape, a few behaviours make any platform faster, safer and easier to run. Start here before adding special cases, and keep ownership visible so nothing falls between teams. Align environments so what works in staging works in production. Make the release path predictable and instrument the last mile so you know when users struggle, not just when deploys succeed.

Privacy, consent and data quality

Apply consent at the top of the stack so it is enforced consistently. A consent management platform (CMP) captures the user’s choice once. A tag manager reads that choice and only loads analytics and marketing tags when consent is present. Search is indexed on publish so editors understand why speed to live varies. Consent gates tags through the CMP and tag manager, not inside MA.

Pricing and availability resolve server‑side or at the edge so pages remain fast and trustworthy. The experience layer extends the data layer to cover product view, add to basket, checkout steps and purchase or quote submit.

Keep the same gates, flags and rollback to make releases low risk. Treat merchandising speed as an explicit metric and optimise the steps that slow it down. Protect page performance with image policies and third‑party controls. Prove the end‑to‑end path with a first increment before adding promotions, bundles or regional complexity. With clean data in and dependable events out, product teams can change price, content and ranges with confidence.

Self‑service or portal pattern

This pattern enables authenticated customers to complete tasks such as billing, bookings, support and account changes. Identity and access management issues tokens to the experience layer. An integration layer connects to back‑office systems with retries and dead‑letter queues so failures are visible and recoverable. The data layer records task start, success and error codes, and consent still branches analytics in authenticated contexts.

A small set of signals tells you whether the platform described in this play is working; a simple maturity view shows where you are today and what “better” looks like next. Keep it light. The signals that matter

Release pipeline health
The share of changes that follow the standard path to production and pass objective gates automatically. Look for previews available, automated checks run, and rollback rehearsed. When this signal is healthy, releases feel routine rather than risky.

Cadence and recovery
How often you release and how fast you recover when something goes wrong. Smaller, regular releases with a short mean time to restore indicate a platform that supports steady change rather than big-bang drops.

Consent and event reliability
How consistently the consent management platform gates tags and how often the data layer emits the agreed events without personally identifiable information. If this drifts, you will make decisions on untrusted numbers and risk non-compliance.

Lead routing reliability
The percentage of enquiries that deduplicate and route from marketing automation to customer relationship management within the service-level agreement, with required fields present. If this is weak, sales confidence drops and marketing loses credibility.
