wagamama- a Sitecore customer

wagamama up and running on new and exciting Sitecore website.

Leading global Japanese-inspired restaurant chain wagamama appointed Codehouse to redevelop its UK, US and international franchise Sitecore-powered websites.

wagamama wanted to re-build their brand websites. Their desire was to have a site that made the food the hero visually, and that delivered improved flexibility and functionality whilst ensuring that user and customer experiences were not compromised.

We were appointed to both facilitate the support of wagamama’s existing Sitecore site in regard to bug fixes and content entry, alongside implementing the new designs provided by Elvis Communications into front-end technologies, new page templates and content modules.

The first thing we did was to carry out an installation of wagamama’s complete Sitecore solution into our development environments. Following a familiarisation process and extensive sprint planning, our User Experience team and back-end developers started working on the project using the Agile Methodology approach.

Our team of Sitecore developers created various new page types which included a generic/flexible page and a restaurant details page amongst others. Each page type included a variety of content specific placeholders.

In order to promote flexibility a modular approach was adopted. This involved our developing a number of content modules that ranged from a Hero Unit and Newsletter sign-up to Call-to-action and Search. One module in particular that is bespoke to wagamama is an HTML5 Video/Animated GIF “Cinemagraph” module. Developed by our User Interface (UI) team the responsive “Cinemagraph” module totally enhances the presentation of large hero images.

Our UI developers also implemented a variety of front-end technologies to the visuals provided by Elvis Communications. HTML5, CSS3 and advanced JavaScript were used to deliver a Parallax display, a touch controlled mobile side navigation, a plethora of intuitive element animations and a dynamic menu filtering system.

The first impression when visiting wagamama’s new Sitecore site is the eye-catching photography of their tantalising menu dishes. These are presented as a hugely impressive and immersive parallax display where the background images move slower than those in the foreground, creating the illusion of (3D) depth and perspective.

As you navigate through the site you experience intuitive animations, dynamic menu filtering and touch controlled mobile side navigation. The responsive “Cinemagraph” technology displays moving imagery, taking the presentation of large hero images to another (immersive) level. These features add to the user experience and go a long way in improving site aesthetics, usability and engagement.

From a user’s perspective, wagamama’s re-booted Sitecore website delivers a much improved and a much faster environment for content editors, alleviating the previous frustrations of editing content in a slow environment.

A bespoke Sitecore user guide was created so that wagamama’s content team can become familiar with their website's structure, and most importantly, for them to become confident in creating content.

“As true Sitecore experts, Codehouse were a natural partner for us for this project. We wanted to really up the ante with our new site, to utilise new technologies and to use motion to hero our food and provide a much more immersive experience for our visitors. We really couldn’t have got what we have got were it not for a great team.

We are very proud of the UK website and it has received some incredible feedback. We now look forward to launching the USA site followed by new sites for our global franchise partners later this year”
